If you’re a Mac user like me, who uses VirtualBox to run guest / virtual Operating Systems within OS X, you will most likely encounter errors with VirtualBox under Mavericks, specifically if you upgrade to OS 10.9 from a pre-existing OS X install where VirtualBox was already installed. VirtualBox is the most easiest way to run secondary OS on your primary operating system, If your hardware doesn’t allow you to install any other operating system then VirtualBox comes in hand. It is a free and powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product available for most of the operating systems such as Linux, Microsoft Windows. Before we install OS X, we’ll need to set up VirtualBox so the OS X install disc can boot correctly. Here’s what you need to do: Step 1: Launch VirtualBox and click the New button. Give your new virtual machine a name (I just called it “Mac OS X”) and set the operating system to “Mac OS X Server (64-bit)”. AutoDMG will do this for you. It will make .dmg from the downloaded installer and produce a bootable disk image which can be deployed to machines.

However VirtualBox does not officially support creating Mac virtual machines. Last time I checked using a standard Mac installer in Virtualbox even if from a dog would not work because VirtualBox does not emulate the SMC chip in a 'real' Mac. Both Parallels and VMWare Fusion do emulate this and therefore can run Mavericks virtual machines with no problems both also can directly build a Mavericks virtual machine from the downloaded app so you don't even have to make a disk image to do this.

It would not be appropriate to discuss here how to 'hack' a Mac installer to get round the above mentioned problem with Virtualbox.
